Head And Neck Onco-Surgery

DEPARTMENT OF HEAD AND NECK ONCO-SURGERY

The term "Head and Neck Cancer" encompasses a wide range of tumors that occur in several areas of the head and neck region. Head and Neck Surgery is done for tumors of the mouth, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice Box), esophagus, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, parotid and other salivary glands, soft tissue tumors, bone tumors, tumors of the dentoalveolar structures, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, base of the skull, ear canal and temporal bone, nerves and blood vessels of the neck and skin cancers including melanoma.

Our treatment philosophy is based on multi-disciplinary team approach emphasizing on organ preservation and restoration of form and function by advanced reconstructive surgery, and rehabilitative services. Our team consists of internationally renowned physicians in the field of head and neck oncology and state-of-art infrastructure.  All patients are evaluated by senior consultants for the most optimal treatment options, and are discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor board if required to determine optimal treatment plan. Multidisciplinary tumour board takes place every Monday in Head and Neck OPD and is attended by faculty from Surgical, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Radiological services.

Facilities available in the Department of Head and Neck Oncology

The Head and Neck Surgical Oncology has 13 operating rooms per week for major surgical procedures. Department is equipped with state of the art da vinci robot (for trans oral robotic surgery- TORS), CO2 laser machine with high end operating microscope (for trans oral laser microsurgery- TLM), micro-drill, xenon head light. Plastic reconstructive surgical procedures including soft tissue and bony free flaps are being carried out in the department.

OPD is located on 2nd floor OPD block Room No 1 to 12.  OPD is equipped with modern ENT examination tables and endoscopy room (no. 7)having 00 nasal endoscopes (for diagnostic nasal endoscopy), 900 Hopkins endoscopes (rigid laryngoscope) with recording features. This room is utilized for office based endoscopies as well as biopsy with availability of suction machine and bipolar cautery machine.

The minor OT is located in 2nd floor in OPD Block Room no. 12, which attends to diagnostic work i.e. incisional and punch biopsies and dressings. It is equipped with sterile basic surgical instruments for minor procedures like suture removal, drain removal, dressing, debridement, re-suturing, and minor biopsies. It has suction machine to aid for tracheostomy tube care and change. An extension to minor OT is under-construction at present with an aim to segregate post-operative clean and contaminated cases for dressings and minor surgical procedures.
